Psychological trauma can cause a variety of symptoms including panic attacks, depression, nightmares, insomnia, flashbacks, amnesia, emotional detachment and dissociation. Many people suffering from past trauma feel flooded with upsetting emotions and have trouble coping with stress and their personal and professional relationships. Many end up suffering from Post-Traumatic-Stress-Disorder (PTSD) and often begin to abuse alcohol and drugs in an effort to numb painful memories and feelings. Survivors of acute trauma often feel as though they are permanently damaged when their symptoms continue to persist and they can feel overwhelmed with rage and despair that their lives will never improve.
There are many ways to treat trauma and alleviate the symptoms associated with it. Therapy can help survivors of trauma process the difficult memories and learn how to better regulate the strong emotions they are struggling with. I use a combination of psychodynamic, somatic, psychoanalytic, and cognitive-behavioral approaches designed to help the survivor metabolize their experience of the trauma and re-experience a sense of balance and health in their lives.
